April 12 is Celebrate National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!

grilled cheese day 2And since we all know that cheese and wine is simply divine, it’s just yet another day to celebrate the best pairing ever!

And there’s so very many ways to enjoy.  At minimum, a good grilled cheese sandwich requires just three ingredients:  bread, cheese, and butter.  But, oh, what we can do with a little imagination…

The classic American grilled cheese sandwich emerged in the 1920s when inexpensive cheese and affordable sliced bread became available.  Keep it simple with plain old American cheese on white bread and a rich, fruity Chardonnay will always work.

Wanna get a bit fancy?  How about cheddar cheese with bacon.  After all, isn’t everything better with bacon?  The cheddar will up the sharpness of the cheese, so go red, but nothing too heavy.  A nice lighter style red like a Sangiovese would be a great match-up.

How about eating like the French, and enjoying  “Croque Monsieur”,  a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.  Make yours with Gruyère cheese, coarse-grained mustard, thinly sliced ham, dried apricot halves, and toasted pistachios – and throw it on a couple of French bread slices.  Add a vibrant rose or a fruity, but dry, Tempranillo for a perfect combination.  Or maybe adding some sweet caramelized onions to your Gruyère is more your preference?  In that case, pour a lightly sweet Riesling.

If Brie is your cheese of choice, try a panini-style sandwich with apple butter and bacon (again, what’s not better with bacon?) on raisin-walnut bread.  Nothing better than bubbly with brie, right?  But with the addition of the bacon, maybe a nice Chenin Blanc would be the ticket.

Goat cheese lovers, add a bit of smoked salmon with a bit of dill flavored butter.  That would be a heaven on earth partner for a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.  YUM!

The choices and pairings are endless.  Give a few a try – and tell us about your favorites.  Just make sure you’re drinking Temecula Valley wines while you’re at it!

Earth Day ~ April 22

earth day

Each year, Earth Day – April 22  – marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement.  The idea was that of Earth Day founder, Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, who was devastated after witnessing the ravages of a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.

As a result of his efforts, on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife, suddenly realized they shared common values.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

Today, it is celebrated by billions of people around the world and is observed in over 190 countries. Worldwide Earth Day celebrations utilize educational programs to inform people of ways they can help protect the environment and our natural resources.

Earth Day worked because of a spontaneous response at the grassroots level. No one thought they would organize 20 million demonstrators!  Just think what could happen if we garnered that kind of response to a few simple tasks that each of us could easily do in just ONE day.  Think about it.  What a difference we could make!

A few simple things that provide huge impacts might include planting a tree every year, switching off lights when not in use and using recyclable bags for grocery shopping.  Easy enough, huh?  Check out our Recork and Recycle Pinterest page for some great recycling ideas.

Or you could always “save water and shower with a friend” like they did in the 70’s…

April is Down to Earth Month!

2015 Down to EarthApril is California Wines: Down to Earth Month and it’s an ideal time to check out earth-friendly Temecula Valley wines made with sustainable winegrowing and winemaking practices.

Wineries from around the state are celebrating Down to Earth Month throughout April.  Here in Temecula, the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association is hosting its 32nd Annual Grape Day on April 23.  The event fortifies the commitment of the local wine industry to keep abreast of current – and new – efforts and studies conducted throughout the state aimed at keeping the wine industry sustainably conscious.  We invite anyone interested in winemaking and winegrape growing to join us.

Being good neighbors and good stewards of the land are important values in the California wine community. The state’s growers and vintners have been using sustainable winegrowing practices for decades, with educational efforts beginning as early as the late 1950’s. Today, the Temecula Valley is home to three wineries who have made an even stronger commitment to sustainability and transparency.  Through self-assessment and certification programs created by the Wine Institute, the California Association of Winegrape Growers and the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, Palumbo Family Vineyards & Winery, Ponte Family Estate Winery and South Coast Winery Resort & Spa have each conquered the next step, which is to become a Certified Sustainable Winery.  And more are on their way to certification!

Some super, easy to spot examples of sustainable practices in Temecula Valley include:

  • The use of beneficial birds to control pests (look for hawk perches and owl boxes)
  • Cover crops (no, we didn’t forget to mow between the vines!)
  • Drip irrigation systems to manage and monitor water use (as well as deficit irrigation techniques)
  • Composting:  the recycling of grape “must”, skins and seeds back into the vineyards as fertilizer.

Come check it out.  And if you can’t make it here in person, just open a bottle of Temecula Valley wine and toast our commitment from green grapes to glass!

Temecula Valley Vineyards See Early Budbreak

Despite the abnormally wet December and SNOW (!) in January, winter just didn’t last long enough in Temecula Valley’s wine country to keep spring at bay.

“We thought last year was early”, said Steve Andrews, Oak Mountain Winery’s owner and winemaker, “but we’re already seeing some “pushing” on our hillside vineyards”.  And “pushing” leads to budbreak, which is exactly what JD Harkey, of Drake Enterprises, a local farm management company, reported today.  JD shared the photo above, showing actual bud- break on a head-pruned Zinfandel vine he saw just this morning.

“It’s the earliest budbreak I’ve ever seen”, said Harkey.  “It’s going to be an interesting harvest!”

While delaying pruning as long as possible – sometimes into January and early February – often results in later budbreak, this year is proving challenging for local vineyard managers.  An early budbreak can be devastating to a vineyard if a late spring frost comes along, particularly if the buds have begun to flower, which is the pre-cursor to fruit set.

We were lucky last year, which was also a record breaker for early bud break here in Temecula.  We were thankful for a nice, long and temperate spring season that allowed the fruit to develop fully and evenly throughout the valley. In order to obtain a gambling license in Australia, it is first necessary to understand and study the laws of Australia and each state separately. The main law that regulates gambling is the Interactive Gambling Act passed by the Commonwealth Parliament of Australia in 2001. This law also made legal and regulated online gambling. And in 2021, an amendment requiring additional licensing of casino games https://www.ilucki.com/en-AU establishments by Australian authorities was introduced, which also added ways for players to opt out of gambling protection. And while we all know that Mother Nature does what she wills, we’re hoping she slows things down a bit.  We want more winter!

It’s National Drink Wine Day!

national wine day

Yep, you heard it right.  Today is National Drink Wine Day!

Just think… an entire day designated to drinking wine. I am so in!   And yes, we’ve all seen the studies that show drinking a glass of wine a day improves heart health, reduces forgetfulness, boosts immunity, and increases bone density. So, it’s healthy, right?  But really, days like today are just one more reason to enjoy a great wine with some great people.  So pop a cork and raise a glass!

And just for fun, here’s a few fun facts to share with your friends while you’re sharing that bottle of Temecula Valley wine.

 1.  Italy produces the most wine.

2.  California produces the most Chardonnay.

3.  Very few wines improve with age.

4.  The term “bouquet” refers to the scent of the wine; “aroma” is the scent of the grapes.  Together they equal the “nose”.

5.  There’s about 100 calories in a glass of wine.

6.  The word “wine” is mentioned 521 times in the Bible.

7.  Marilyn Monroe is said to have bathed in champagne. It took 350 bottles to fill her bathtub.

8.  Swirling “aerates” your wine by releasing the compounds which combine with oxygen to create the bouquet or aroma.

9.  Three glasses of dry red wine have less calories than one Twix bar.

10.  In California, wine country tours are second only to Disneyland in popularity with tourists.

Wine Country Recipe: Cheese Fondue

FN_Tyler Flrorence Cheese Fonue.tif

Nothing screams romance more than fondue!  So, this Valentine’s Day, if you’d prefer to forgo the crowded restaurants and opt for a quick, simple and romantic meal at home, we’ve got you covered with this cheese fondue recipe.  Pair with a salad, your favorite Temecula Valley Riesling and perhaps some chocolate fondue for dessert…and…voilà, you’ve got the perfect Valentine’s dinner.

Ingredients:

1/2 pound imported Swiss cheese, shredded
1/2 pound Gruyere cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 garlic clove, peeled
1 cup dry white wine
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon cherry brandy, such as kirsch
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
Pinch nutmeg
Assorted dippers

Directions:

In a small bowl, coat the cheeses with cornstarch and set aside.  Rub the inside of the ceramic fondue pot with the garlic, then discard.

Over medium heat, add the wine and lemon juice and bring to a gentle simmer.  Gradually stir the cheese into the simmering liquid.  Melting the cheese gradually encourages a smooth fondue.  Once smooth, stir in cherry brandy, mustard and nutmeg.

Arrange an assortment of bite-sized dipping foods on a lazy Susan around fondue pot.  Serve with chunks of French and pumpernickel breads.  Some other suggestions are Granny Smith apples and blanched vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and asparagus. FurnitureCap  Spear with fondue forks or wooden skewers, dip, swirl and enjoy!

Suggested pairings:

Baily Vineyard & Winery ~ 2013 Riesling – A delicate, dry and fruity white.

Briar Rose Winery ~ 2013 Riesling – Opening up with a soft apricot on the front and light fruity sweetness on the finish.

Lorenzi Estate Vineyards & Winery ~ 2012 Riesling – The nose is aromatic with spicy stone fruit with a combination of sweet Meyer lemons, along with tropical touches of mango and pineapple.

Mount Palomar Winery ~ 2012 Riesling – Prominent scents of pineapple and soft hints of star fruit, with a smooth tropical finish.
