Meet the Families Behind Temecula Valley Wine Country

In celebration of Family Winemakers Month, meet the founders, farmers, winemakers and next-generation leaders whose families have helped shape Temecula Valley Wine Country.

Family-owned wineries come in many forms. Some begin with vineyards passed from one generation to the next. Others start with a first-generation leap of faith, a parcel of land, and an idea of what a winery could become.

Across Temecula Valley, these stories are still unfolding. Founders remain involved decades after planting their first vines. Children and grandchildren are stepping into winemaking, farming, hospitality, and leadership roles. Husbands, wives, and siblings work alongside one another, often wearing several hats in the course of a single day.

In recognition of Family Winemakers Month, we’re introducing some of the families behind Temecula Valley Wine Country — and the experiences that best reflect what they have built together.

AKASH WINERY

Founded: The Patel family purchased the property in 2010 and opened the tasting room in 2018.

Meet the Family

Akash Winery began as the vision of Ray Patel, who purchased land on Calle Contento with his wife, Nalini, and their son, Akash. Today, Akash Patel manages the winery’s day-to-day operations, while Ray continues to lend his business expertise. Akash’s wife, Elena Patel, serves as social media director. The family also continues to honor Nalini, whose warmth and generosity remain central to the winery’s identity.

On Family

“Our family story is pretty much the American dream personified. My parents built successful hospitality businesses with little more than sheer moxie and the support of friends. Because they started with very little, they understood the value of hard work and building community. My mom was an incredibly kind, humanistic person, and it was very important to her that every guest felt like family.”

Don’t Miss

The winery’s Yoga + Wine experience, which brings together the family’s heritage and easygoing approach through movement, nature and wine made from the surrounding vineyards.

BAILY FAMILY VINEYARDS

Founded: 1986 by Phil and Carol Baily.

Meet the Family

Phil and Carol Baily continue to direct the business they founded nearly four decades ago. Phil makes the wines alongside their son Patrick and grandson Alex, while grapes come from the winery’s estate vineyards as well as vineyards owned by their son Chris and daughter-in-law Kim. The result is a family enterprise spanning three generations.

On Family

“Carol and I have been so fortunate that most of our family has remained in Temecula and decided to be a part of the winery. To think that Baily Family Vineyards will survive us and become a multigenerational enterprise is very gratifying to us all.”

Don’t Miss

A vertical tasting hosted by Phil Baily, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Meritage dating back to the 2005 vintage, accompanied by stories from his decades growing grapes and making wine in Temecula Valley.

CHAPIN FAMILY VINEYARDS

Founded: 2006 by Steve Chapin, following the planting of the family’s vineyards in 2003.

Meet the Family

The Chapin family includes four brothers and one sister, each of whom has contributed to the winery in some capacity. Founder Steve Chapin oversees winemaking and viticulture, while Tim Chapin manages tasting-room operations and purchasing. Susan Chapin assists with new projects and staffing, and brothers Rick and Mark helped construct the winery’s steel structures through their company.

On Family

“Every winery should have heart or soulfulness. The heart of Chapin Family Vineyards is a total focus on wine excellence through science, innovation and experience. Every bottle carries our motto, ‘For the Love of Friendship.’ Whether a visitor purchases wine or not, we want their visit to be the best experience of the day.”

Don’t Miss

A tableside wine tasting on the veranda, with sweeping views toward the Santa Rosa Plateau, followed by a tour of the boutique production facility where the family makes and bottles its wines.

COUGAR VINEYARD & WINERY

Founded: Rick and Jennifer Buffington established Cougar as a bonded winery in 2004, initially operating from their Fallbrook garage.

Meet the Family

Rick and Jennifer Buffington remain hands-on in nearly every aspect of Cougar Vineyard & Winery. Rick serves as winemaker while also overseeing accounting, maintenance, marketing and future distribution. Jennifer manages the office, wine club and social media, assists with production and steps into hospitality wherever needed.

On Family

“Being family-owned means taking personal pride in every bottle we produce. We remain committed to making and bottling our own estate wines, never purchasing another producer’s wine to sell under our label. Because it is truly our winery, we wear many hats and understand every aspect of the business.”

Don’t Miss

A relaxed tasting experience where guests are encouraged to have fun, feel welcome and leave having learned something new about wine.

DOFFO WINERY

Founded: 1997 by Marcelo Doffo.

Meet the Family

The Doffo family remains involved in the winery every day. Founder Marcelo Doffo can often be found working on a project or adding to the family’s motorcycle collection. His son Damian leads the business as CEO, daughter Brigitte oversees design and operations, and daughter Samantha builds community relationships. Even the youngest members of the family lend a hand.

On Family

“Being family-owned means every decision is made with passion, integrity and a long-term vision. Our family has built the winery around hard work, hospitality and creating meaningful experiences, treating every guest like part of the family while honoring our Argentine heritage.”

Don’t Miss

The MotoDoffo Motorcycle Collection, followed by a wine tasting that brings together the family’s passions for handcrafted wine, hospitality and motorcycles.

FRANGIPANI ESTATE WINERY

Founded: 2003 by Don and JoAnn Frangipani.

Meet the Family

Don and JoAnn Frangipani remain active in the tasting room, while their son-in-law Nick Molina serves as winemaker and tasting-room manager. Their daughter Breana Molina helps oversee special events and leads the winery’s monthly Wine About Books club. David Frangipani is also involved in the family business.

On Family

“We remain a family-owned and operated winery, with our family involved in the day-to-day business. We want to share our wines, food and vineyard views while bringing people together to enjoy everything we have worked so hard to maintain over the years.”

Don’t Miss

A glass of wine on the patio overlooking the vineyards—a simple opportunity to slow down, take in the view and appreciate the surroundings.

GERSHON BACHUS VINTNERS

Founded: 2005 by Ken and Christina Falik, following the purchase of the property in 2001. The winery celebrated its first harvest in 2008.

Meet the Family

Ken and Christina Falik founded Gershon Bachus Vintners after purchasing the property in 2001. Their son, Wesley, helped shape the winery from the beginning by creating its first website and establishing its original branding, inspired by Ken’s grandfather, Gershon Bachus, whose dream of making wine helped inspire the family’s journey.

On Family

“Being family-owned means every guest is welcomed like family, and every bottle reflects our passion for quality, craftsmanship and connection. Ken and Christina created Gershon Bachus Vintners to bring people together through handcrafted wines, genuine hospitality, breathtaking views and unforgettable memories shared with family and friends.”

Don’t Miss

Relax on the hilltop patio with a handcrafted wine while taking in panoramic vineyard views and the warm, personal hospitality that defines the Falik family’s approach.

OAK MOUNTAIN WINERY

Founded: 2005 by Valerie and Steve Andrews; purchased and reimagined by Johnny Leon in 2023.

Meet the Family

Owner and CEO Johnny Leon leads Oak Mountain Winery with a focus on innovation, winemaking and hospitality. His wife, Karena Leon, serves as director of operations and marketing, overseeing daily operations, events, guest experience and marketing. Together, they have continued the winery’s legacy while introducing a new family vision.

On Family

“Family is poured into every bottle and reflected throughout our property. Wines like María Elena Red Blend honor Johnny’s late mother, Amor Eterno Muscat Canelli celebrates Johnny and Karena’s love story, and Sueño White Blend represents Johnny’s lifelong dream and passion brought to life.”

Don’t Miss

Explore the mined wine cave, relax on the family-friendly lawn or visit the intimate speakeasy-style distillery, where Johnny and Karena can often be found welcoming guests themselves.

PALUMBO FAMILY VINEYARDS & WINERY

Founded: 2002 by Nick and Cindy Palumbo, who began farming vineyards in Temecula Valley in 1998.

Meet the Family

Nick and Cindy Palumbo live on the winery property where they raised their children and have handled the farming and winemaking themselves since the beginning. Nick serves as owner and winemaker, while Cindy manages the winery. Their eldest son, Reed, now works alongside them as a farmer and assistant winemaker.

On Family

“Raising our family onsite gave us an amazing opportunity to show our children that hard work, dedication to craft and respect for our environment can sustain a wonderful lifestyle—one we can share with customers through wines produced with honesty and passion.”

Don’t Miss

Spend time at the estate, where the vineyards, winery, production area and family homesite come together—and where guests often have the chance to speak directly with Reed, Nick or Cindy.

SOUTH COAST WINERY RESORT & SPA AND CARTER ESTATE WINERY

Founded: South Coast Winery was established in 2001 by Jim Carter.

Meet the Family

Founder Jim Carter continues to serve in an advisory capacity, while his son, Jeff Carter, is president and CEO of the winery and resort operation. Jim founded South Coast with the assistance of winemakers Jon McPherson and Javier Flores, building the business around estate vineyards and control of the process from grape to glass.

On Family

“Jim Carter’s vision was to plant and responsibly maintain the vineyards in order to grow the best possible fruit and give the winemakers the best opportunity to create exceptional wine. The Carter family takes great pride in having control over the entire process, from vineyard to glass.”

Don’t Miss

Experience the family’s agricultural and hospitality vision across the property, where estate-grown wines are paired with cuisine shaped by the same emphasis on ingredients, craftsmanship and place.

WILSON CREEK WINERY

Founded: 2000 by Gerry and Rosie Wilson, with help from the family’s second generation.

Meet the Family

Three generations of the Wilson family remain involved in shaping the Wilson Creek experience. Bill Wilson serves as CEO, Deanna Wilson sits on the board, Mick Wilson is the winery’s sommelier, Cassidy Wilson leads distribution and Jennifer Wilson curates retail merchandise. Matriarch Rosie Wilson continues to welcome guests—often alongside Brut, the family’s winery dog.

On Family

“Wilson Creek was built on a simple dream: to create a place where our family could work side by side doing something we love. That spirit of togetherness, generosity and genuine hospitality continues to shape every guest experience today.”

Don’t Miss Spend an afternoon in the courtyard with a bottle of wine, where members of the Wilson family regularly stop to chat with guests—and Brut may make an appearance.

Get to Know Michael Mohammad, Altisima Winery

My name is Michael Mohammad, and I’m 36 years old. My family moved to Temecula, CA in 1992, back when there was only one stoplight in town and just a handful of wineries. I grew up playing inline hockey and graduated from Temecula Valley High School.

I’ve been in hospitality since I was 16, starting as a dishwasher at Tony Roma’s and working my way through every corner of the industry. Before stepping into wine country, I spent nearly 12 years bartending, connecting with incredible people while crafting cocktails.

About three years ago, I joined the Altisima family, and it’s been amazing to see us honored as Winery of the Year by the Xenia Hospitality Awards. I love being part of a team that’s pushing Temecula’s culture forward — blending elevated wine experiences with authenticity and genuine connection. Whether I’m suggesting wine pairings or sharing stories with guests, my goal is always to make people feel seen, heard, and welcomed.

Outside the winery, I freelance as a graphic designer under the name @themohamz, also known as MOHAMZ Studio. My work spans branding, illustration, and physical product design — everything from logos and T-shirts to digital illustrations and murals. (Fun fact: While working at Temecula Coin-Op, I designed the packaging for their Power Punch — the adult version of Capri Suns.) I’m drawn to projects that blend culture, identity, and storytelling; always chasing that spark where design meets purpose.

At the end of the day, I’m passionate about bold red wine, meaningful conversations, and creating work that resonates with people on a deeper level.

What wine trend are you most excited about right now?

I don’t know if it’s a “trend,” but I’m really excited about the younger generation of winemakers coming up. They’re not afraid to take risks, break the rules, and bring something new to the table. You can tell they care more about expression and community than chasing points or prestige. I see a lot of creativity and purpose in what they’re doing — and that’s something I really connect with.

What do you love most about working in wine country?

What I love most about working in wine country is how it brings everything I care about together — good wine, good people, and good vibes. Every day is a mix of hospitality and creativity, whether I’m pouring a glass, having a real conversation, or just taking in the views. There’s something special about this place — it turns everyday moments into something memorable.

If your personality were a wine varietal, which would it be and why?

If I had to pick a wine that matches my personality, I’d say Cabernet Franc. It’s bold, creative, and a little unexpected — kind of like me. It blends well with others. It’s got depth and complexity, but there’s also this wild side that doesn’t always follow the rules. I’m not the loudest in the room, but I try to bring something unique that’s memorable.

What song would you pair with your favorite glass of wine?

“The World Is Yours” by Nas — that’s my go-to track with a bold glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s smooth, confident, and layered — just like a good Cab. The jazzy beat has this mellow, reflective vibe that hits different when you’re sketching, thinking, or just enjoying a quiet moment.

He might be sipping Dom P in the lyrics, but I’m posted with a Cab — same energy.

It’s a classic track that holds up over time, and that’s what I love about it. It’s got depth, it’s intentional, and it sticks with you — just like the wine.

What’s something new you’re hoping to learn this year?

This year, I’m looking forward to getting back into more hands-on design. I’ll be taking a screen-printing class and a ceramics class this fall — both are new for me and a chance to explore different ways of working with form and texture. I’m also planning to pick up a laser cutter soon, which will open up a lot of possibilities for more custom, physical design work through MOHAMZ Studio.

Temecula’s Finest Rosé: Handcrafted Pink Wine Magic

Rosé is no longer just a seasonal sipper or a “summer water” trend – it’s a bona fide category in its own right, with styles ranging from bone-dry and mineral-driven to lightly sweet and effervescent, and everything in between. Traditionally made from red grapes using techniques like direct pressing or the saignée method, rosé gets its signature hue from brief contact with grape skins – just enough to tease out color and flavor without the tannic structure of a red wine. Some are still, some sparkle, and all are welcome at our table.

Here in Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country, rosé has found its groove. The region’s warm days and cool nights produce beautifully ripe grapes with plenty of fresh acidity, perfect for crafting vibrant and expressive rosé wines. From Provençal-inspired pours to bold blends with SoCal flair, Temecula winemakers are leaning into this pink renaissance with creativity and confidence.

Temecula Valley Standouts

What makes rosé such a crowd-pleaser, beyond its Instagrammable hue, is its undeniable versatility. It plays well with everything from briny oysters and creamy cheeses to spicy Thai dishes and summer BBQ fare. Whether you prefer your rosé still or sparkling, dry or slightly sweet, there’s a bottle in Temecula Valley that’s ready to become your next warm-weather favorite.

Here are 12 standout rosé wines from Temecula Valley that deserve a spot in your glass:

Bottaia Winery 2023 Blush, $45

Ponte Winery 2024 Pas Doux Rosé, $35

Pas Doux means “not sweet” in French, explains the style of this tasty dry rosé. A co-fermented blend of Syrah, Primitivo, and Tempranillo, this wine is light-bodied with notes of cantaloupe, rose petals, and strawberries. Ideal with sweet-savory or spicy dishes. Get it HERE.

Ponte Winery 2023 Bubbly Rosé, $35

Made from Merlot, this sparkler pops with white peach and strawberry aromas, a light body, and a dry finish. Serve it with Mediterranean dishes or simply toast to summer. Get it HERE.

Named for Robert Renzoni’s daughter, this Provencal-style Syrah rosé features nectarine, strawberry, and a zesty white pepper finish. Mango shrimp ceviche, anyone? Get it HERE.

South Coast Winery 2023 Grenache Noir Rosé, $29

Grenache may be best known for its bold red blends, but in this Temecula rosé, it shows off a more delicate side. Gently pressed to preserve freshness and finesse, this wine shines with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and just a hint of cotton candy. Bright citrus and soft florals round out the profile, offering a dry, nuanced sip with crisp acidity and subtle complexity. It’s the kind of rosé that plays well with everything from Mediterranean fare to richer seafood dishes. Get it HERE.

Let this be your cue to stock up on Temecula rosé – one bottle for the beach, one for the backyard, and one, well, just because it’s Tuesday. Discover more award-winning wines from the Temecula Valley HERE.
